How to Choose a Bed Frame
A bed is the largest object in most bedrooms, and the frame decides how it sits in the room. A modern bed frame can be a low platform bed that keeps the mattress close to the floor, an upholstered bed with a padded headboard, a solid wood bed frame in oak, ash, walnut, acacia, mango or pine, a metal bed frame, a storage bed, or a canopy bed that reaches toward the ceiling. Each changes the height of the mattress, how much headboard shows above the pillows, and how much floor is left around it.
A queen bed frame and a king bed frame are built around a 60 by 80 inch mattress and a 76 by 80 inch mattress, but the frame runs wider and longer than the mattress it holds, so the room has to be measured against the frame. Full, twin and California king frames follow the same logic. A platform bed frame with a slat system supports the mattress on its own and needs no box spring, which is one reason so many contemporary bed frames sit low.
Material settles the rest. Solid wood is heavy and can be refinished, while veneer over an engineered core stays flat across a wide headboard. Linen or leather upholstery softens the headboard and changes how the bed is cleaned. What size is a queen bed frame, and a king?
A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches and a king is 76 by 80. A California king is 72 by 84, a full is 54 by 75, and a twin is 38 by 75. The frame is always larger than the mattress. A queen size bed frame and a king size bed frame are the two most common, but a twin bed frame and a full bed frame follow the same rule. Side rails and a headboard add 2 to 12 inches to the width and 4 to 10 inches to the length, so a king bed frame commonly measures 80 to 90 inches wide and 82 to 94 inches long.

Do you need a box spring with a platform bed?
No. A platform bed supports the mattress directly on a slat system or a solid deck, so a box spring adds nothing but height and lifts the mattress above the level the frame was designed for. Some mattress warranties set a maximum slat spacing, so check the mattress maker's terms before choosing a frame.

Wood, metal or upholstered, which bed frame is right?
A solid wood bed frame is heavy, can be sanded and refinished, and moves a little with the seasons. Oak and white oak are pale and hard, walnut is darker and softer, and acacia and mango vary enough from board to board that no two frames match. Veneer over MDF or plywood stays flat across a wide headboard and weighs less, but it cannot be refinished once it wears through.
An upholstered bed wraps a wood or engineered frame in foam and fabric or leather. A metal bed frame is lighter for its strength and takes the least floor space at the leg, though hammered iron can outweigh wood.
How tall should a headboard be, and does a bed need one?
Headboards run from about 30 inches to over 80, and the number that matters is how far it clears the mattress. A platform bed at 30 to 40 inches overall sits below the sill of many windows, which is what makes it the frame that can go under one. Most headboards land between 45 and 55 inches, which clears the pillows on a made bed. A tall headboard bed reaches 55 to 65, and a canopy bed or four poster bed can pass 80, so check the ceiling height and any fan or light fixture above the bed before choosing one.
A bed does not need a headboard. A platform bed with no headboard keeps a low, quiet line and suits a small bedroom. A bed frame with a headboard gives the wall a focal point and something to lean against.
How much space does a bed need in a bedroom?
Allow 24 to 30 inches on each side of the bed for getting in and out and for making it. Leave 36 inches at the foot where people pass or where a dresser's drawers open. A king bed in a 12 by 12 foot room leaves about 30 inches on either side and roughly 5 feet at the foot, before nightstands.
Under-bed clearance is set by the leg height, and anything under about 6 inches will not take a storage box. A storage bed frame with a lift up deck or drawers solves that differently.
How far apart should bed slats be, and what stops a bed frame from squeaking?
Most foam and hybrid mattresses want slats no more than 3 inches apart, and some warranties ask for closer spacing or a solid deck. Slats spaced that way carry the mattress evenly and let air move beneath it.
Squeaks come from loose bolts and from wood or metal parts rubbing where they meet. Tighten the hardware after the first month of use, since a new frame settles as it takes weight. That alone accounts for most of them.
How do you clean and care for a wood or upholstered bed frame?
Dust wood with a dry cloth and keep it out of direct sun, which lightens walnut and darkens oak over time. Vacuum fabric with a brush attachment and blot a spill rather than rubbing it. The care code for the specific fabric is on the product page. Leather takes a dry cloth for dust and a slightly damp one for marks, and it should sit away from radiators and direct sun.
Grain, color and figure vary from one piece to the next. That variation is what solid wood looks like, and it is why two frames cut from the same species can read differently in the same room.
